Hip and knee osteoarthritis can affect both young and old individuals. Such condition can affect the mobility and optimal clinical assessment and treatment must be done. In young patients it often involves keyhold (arthroscopic) procedure to address the soft tissue and cartilage injury. In patients with advance osteoarthritis optimal choice of joint bearings can facilitate in full return of function including running; cross legged sitting and all other sporting activities.
In this current era sports is becoming a very increasingly popular feature among all patients regardless of age. As a result there is also an increasing number of sports injuries. Getting the patient back to active sports includes optimising their clinical function; sports rehabilitation and appropriate surgical intervention when necessary. In our clinic there is also a physiotherapist who works in close partnership with Dr S S Sathappan to optimise the patients recovery to the fullest.
Robotic surgery is an upcoming trend in orthopaedics. Facilitating optimal alignment and precision cuts are achieved by the use of robots. Conventional joint replacement procedures are increasingly now replaced by robotic technology such that it facilitates in minimally invasive (“keyhole”) as well as optimising surgical kenematics surgical outcomes by optimising joint kinematics. In our clinic there is a detailed clinical assessment of the patient’s joint conditions and their suitability towards joint replacement using robotic technology such as makoplasty.
In patients joint arthritis can affect the shoulder; elbow; knee; hip and ankle. Assessment of patients suitability via appropriate imaging and clinical assessment facilitates in optimal functional outcome and recovery. In younger patients bearing options need to be optimised such as the use of ceramic such as the longevity can be access of 20 to 30 years. By appropriate clinical assessment with imaging patients will undergo joint replacement with the aid of robotics or computer guided surgery resulting in early return to function.
He has vast experience beyond clinical practice including being Adjunct Assistant Professor in NUS; Speciality Board Member for the chapter of orthopaedic surgeons; Program Director and in-charge of specialist in training in Orthopaedics in the National Healthcare Group. He has written numerous publications in peer reviewed channels and book chapters in several orthopaedics textbook.
